Private Joseph McIntyre Macauley

 

 

Joseph McIntyre Macauley was born on 28 October 1897 at Olphert Place, Coleraine, County Londonderry, the second of seven children of dealer James Macauley and his wife Mary (nee McNaul). His twin brother died at the age of just 5.

By the time of the 1911 Census he was living with his parents and siblings in Abbey Street, Coleraine.

Macauley enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 14 November and 10 December 1917 (No.2742 - later Corps of Hussars No.71996). He did not serve overseas during the war, remaining at the regimental reserve depot at Antrim until 1919, when he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.

 

Macauley's older brother Robert (below) also served in the war, in the 10th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.
